Hyphenated was a derogatory term popular in the United States around the turn of the 20th century to describe persons with non-American heritage residing in America. Ironically, by today's standards, it was primarily used to refer to caucasians—mostly Germans and Irish. It is a word that resonates with me despite its origins because I am if nothing else hyphenated: in my interests, in my background, my family and friends. At the same time it captures the essence of what I hope this blog will be: blurring the lines between different topics and disciplines in such a way as to be greater than the sum of its parts, neither here nor there, but both and more. I like hyphens.

This blog is intended to be a destination for me to write about topics that interest me, ranging from science to sport, culture and politics. Stylistically I will attempt to make each post accessible such that readers not familiar with the given topic can still understand as much as possible. Where useful extra details or context are not explicitly covered, pointers in margins should guide the reader to relevant resources.
My hope is for my writing to lead to fun conversations so please reach out if you have any thoughts, objections or anything in between!
